This is a press release from the Canal and River Trust:

People living in Mirfield and Dewsbury are being encouraged to help blitz litter and tackle overgrowing weeds and greenery along the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Shepley Bridge in Mirfield.

The Canal and River Trust, working in partnership with the Mirfield Community Partnership and Calder Navigation Society, is asking people to give just a few hours on Saturday 26 October to get the canal looking ship-shape after a warm, busy summer.

Lucy Dockray, volunteer leader for the Canal and River Trust, said; “The warm weather that we enjoyed over the summer, and even as late as last week, has meant that some of the trees, shrubs and occasional weeds have grown a bit more than usual and we’re really keen for local people to come forward and help us give them a bit of a trim”.

In addition to keeping the canalside greenery in check the volunteers will also help to clear litter from the towpath. Members of the Calder Navigation Society will also have a boat in the area helping the volunteers to remove rubbish from the water and get into all the hard to reach places.

Lucy Dockray continues; “Litter on the towpath and in the water looks nasty but it’s also really harmful to waterside wildlife and it’s great to see communities taking action to help care for their local canal. We’d love to see more people come forward and help to make a real difference for all the people and wildlife that will enjoy the waterways through the autumn months.”

The tidy up will take place from 10am at Shepley Bridge Marina, Mirfield, WF14 9HR.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring their friends along.  All tools and equipment will be provided and volunteers should wear old clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty.
